Many people don’t know much about the EAP program at their office or what it can do for them.  Lots of workplaces declare themselves drug free workplaces.  They expect that all employees will be drug free during work hours.  But depending on your profession, you may not be at immediate risk of being fired if it becomes known that you have an alcohol or drug problem.  And even if you manage to stay drug and alcohol free while you are at work, alcoholic behaviors can still have a dramatic affect on your productivity and your time management.

First Counseling Sessions Available Through EAP

According to the substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration with the US Federal Government, and EAP program has three functions.  It provides counseling and assistance with drug treatment, it provides education and training, and it ensures that records are confidential.  An employee needing help with the drug or alcohol problem can take their first step within EAP program.  EAP programs usually provide four or five counseling sessions to get the person started.  That time is used to get a diagnosis and decide what long-term treatment would be best.

EAP Covers Leave and Confidentiality

EAP programs also permit employees to use various types of employment leave to cover their absence for counseling sessions or longer periods of treatment.  Above all, any involvement in employee has been EAP program is to be kept in the strictest of confidence.  This information is shared on a need-to-know basis only.  As you can imagine, the stigma for drug and alcohol addiction can be pretty bad.  EAP officers do everything possible to work with the employee without over-exposing this sensitive information.  This also allows the employee to share this information as they wish to with their friends and coworkers, or keep it completely private.  The point of an EAP program is to retain good employees by giving them help, not to embarrass and shame them in front of everyone.
