Do You Need Inpatient Or Outpatient Drug Rehab

You’ve finally come to the end, the end of your excuses about your drug problem.  You see that it’s time to face your addiction and turn your life around.  But which drug treatment option is better for you, inpatient or outpatient?  We’ll take a look at both so you can make the best decision for you.

Outpatient Drug Treatment

Outpatient drug treatment is meant for someone who can do more on their own.  They go to treatment meetings during the day or evening.  They likely have a job, people around them that care and can help, and they remain living in their own home throughout the treatment process.  They must be motivated enough to keep participating in the program.

Outpatient drug treatment is a lower level of care because there is no supervision outside of the treatment sessions.  Counselors count on participants to be able to stay sober for at least a few days at a time on their own. Some people attending outpatient drug treatment are required to do so because of a DUI or other drug charge.  It may be part of their sentence or they may be getting a reduced penalty for their participation.  Others attend simply because they know they need it.

Inpatient Drug Rehab

An inpatient drug rehab center is designed for someone who needs more support than an outpatient drug program can provide.  It is a residential setting with 24 hour staff availability.  The services are comprehensive, covering all aspects of improving health and keeping sobriety.  Some of the programs at a drug rehab center may include individual and group therapy, therapeutic drama, art classes, yoga, aerobic exercise, and nutrition education.

People stay at drug rehab centers for a few weeks up to to a few months.  Aftercare is important since inpatient drug rehab centers are at a high level of care.  Sober homes, outpatient aftercare, and drug rehab alumni activities are all ways to help a newly sober person transition back into their regular life.

Make Your Drug Treatment Decision With Good Information

As much as you might want to just get it over with, choosing a drug rehab is an important decision.  You need to be at the right level of care to make the most of it.  If you are in a drug rehab facility that’s too high level for you, it may seem like you don’t belong.  If you are in outpatient but really need more structure and support, you may have problems and feel like drug treatment doesn’t help.  It does help when you are matched to the right level of care.  Get good information about the drug treatment programs you are considering and get started.
