Crack Addiction FAQ

What is Crack Addiction?

Crack is a substance made from cocaine, sold in small ‘rocks’ and usually freebased or smoked in a glass pipe. The first hit produces a high but also a craving for a second hit. The second hit brings with it a high as well, but one not as intense as the first hit. Every hit after that is chasing the feeling that the first hit brought and, along the way, the user’s physical cravings turn into physical addiction, which is quickly followed by mental and emotional addiction soon after.

What are the Effects of Crack Addiction?

Crack affects the brain and the body both in the short-term and the long-term. When inhaled, crack is immediately absorbed into the bloodstream and feel the bulk of the euphoric psychotropic effects, or the “high,” within one minute and the physical effects within two minutes. Feelings of low anxiety, low appetite, higher energy and a sense of contentment last for about 30 minutes.

In the long-term, crack users experience paranoia, extreme anxiety, panic and exhibit compulsive behavior, impaired judgment and hyper vigilance. Intense mood changes at the drop of a hat and irritation and agitation are common among crack addicts.

What are the Risks of Crack Addiction?

There are a number of risks associated with crack addiction. Overdose and poisoning that leads to coma, seizure, brain damage and death are not uncommon. Once the initial high wears off, depression sets in and, in some cases, it stays unless relieved by the intake more crack. The psychological changes are severe and include an marked decrease in the ability to concentrate, a decrease in motivation, and increase in confusion and agitation. Physically, a crack addict will experience hallucinations, paranoia and psychosis and the depression combined with that can lead to violent or suicidal behavior.

How Can I Tell if I am or Someone Else is Addicted to Crack?

The signs of crack cocaine addiction are not easy to recognize, whether it is you or someone you love. If you are addicted to crack, you may find yourself thinking about the drug and getting more of it more often than not. You may choose only activities that allow you to get high and friendships with people who use as well or who don’t care or won’t be able to tell if you are high.

If you are concerned about the crack cocaine addiction of someone else, consider the changes in their behavior. Do they seem to isolate more often? Are they lackadaisical about their appearance, keeping appointments and other commitments at school or work? Do they always need money? Have you found paraphernalia? Sometimes, a candid conversation at the right time is enough to answer your questions.
