Celebrity rehab stories are no shocking mystery to the world as we know it. We have learned over time that it isn’t just the average joe who gets tied up in the temptation and turmoil of addiction, but also the silver spoons and the world renowned starlets. No one is immune and no aspect of American life has gone untouched from the impact of addiction. In the face of the opiate epidemic and the overdose outbreak, prescription pills have become some of the usual suspects.

Celebrity Addiction

One of the most recent shocks that came courtesy of the opiate epidemic in America is the death of musician and cultural icon Prince. The late Prince Rogers Nelson’s tragic death was later determined to be a fentanyl overdose. Shortly after his death, sources indicated he himself had actually been looking into drug rehab for prescription pills.

Now there comes a story of hope for another starlet who is struggling with her own history of addiction. Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley has previously been open about her battle with drug and alcohol addiction in her teenage years. Back in 2003 she told reporters with Paper Magazine ,

“[I used] cocaine, sedatives, pot and drinking — all at the same time. I just couldn’t be sober.”

Presley was very clear about the extent of desperation her situation reached, she went on to say,

“I don’t know how I lived through it.”

At the time Lisa Marie Presley credited the Church of Scientology for her recovery. Now it seems she is seeking a different route. Lisa Marie Presley is seeking treatment in a rehab program now for her prescription pill addiction.

According to multiple reports, Presley is seeking treatment at the exclusive, luxurious, $400,000 a month treatment center in Los Angeles. While this may be beyond what the average person can manage when it comes to getting treatment, the necessity to get clean is still there. Sources have reported,

“She’s doing OK but needed to get this under control.”

While life styles and circumstances may be very different than those of the typical addict, the signs of desperation are often still familiar.

Presley’s Personal Life

Given the recent circumstances of the last few months, Lisa Marie Presley is probably dealing with a lot right now. Reports indicate a file for divorce between the 48-year-old singer and her husband of more than 10 years, Michael Lockwood. Sources say the divorce cities irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.

The pair already have a postnuptial agreement to divide their assets. However, Lisa Marie Presley is applying for full custody of the couple’s 7-year-old twin daughters. According to other tabloids she also requested that Lockwood receive monitored visitation.

So in the face of a difficult situation a woman very much in the public eye has found herself seeking help for another personal affliction. While it has so far not been indicated that her drug use had anything to do with her divorce, the reality that addiction can put a strain on the home life is unavoidable. Family matters always find themselves impacted by the disease of addiction, directly or indirectly.

Celebrity Recovery

While one can only imagine how testing it may be to be a celebrity in recovery, Lisa Marie Presley has already shown herself to be a woman who can face her substance issues head on. Hopefully, as before, Lisa Marie Presley will be willing to speak out about how she found herself in need of treatment and how she plans to recover.

Relapse is never required for recovery. However, if there are stories of return from relapse to lasting sobriety then those stories should be shared. Lisa Marie Presley may very well be on her way to an amazing comeback after a time of trial and tribulation. These things happen in recovery, even to celebrities. We can only keep hope more people everywhere will find the help they need. Meanwhile, we cheer on the heroes who are trying to change for life today!

Celebrity addiction stories highlight the addiction problem in a different way, showing how substance abuse does not discriminate. Sadly, overdose or death don’t discriminate either.
